Technique clip: the knee-to-elbow escape

One of the first escapes we teach. When someone is mounted on top of you, you use your frames and hips to create space, then bring your knee back to your elbow to recover guard. Watch it in action in class.

Gi vs No-Gi: which should I start with?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is trained two ways, and both are on our timetable. If you're new, here's how they differ and how to choose.

Gi. You wear a kimono: a thick jacket, trousers and a belt. You can grip the fabric, which slows the pace and rewards patience, control and technical detail. It's the traditional way to train and where belt ranks come from.

No-Gi. You wear shorts and a fitted rash vest. With no fabric to hold, you control your partner by their body, arms and head. It's faster, more slippery and more scramble-heavy.

Which first? Either works, and the skills carry across. Many beginners like Gi because the grips make positions easier to hold while they learn. Others prefer No-Gi because the kit is simpler and the movement feels more natural. If you can't decide, choose the time that fits your week.

Our advice. Try one of each. After a couple of weeks you'll know which you enjoy most, and most people end up training both. Ask us before buying a kimono.

Our Gi classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm and Saturday at 10:00am. No-Gi runs on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday at 6:00pm and Saturday at 11:00am.

What to expect at your first BJJ class

Most beginners worry about being the least fit or least experienced person in the room. You won't be the first, and you won't be judged for it. Classes are mixed ability, so newcomers train alongside people with more experience.

Before you arrive. Book a session on our schedule and arrive a little early to meet the instructor. Mention any injuries so he can adjust what you do.

What to bring. Comfortable sports kit, water, and flip flops for walking around the gym. Flip flops never go on the mats.

In the class. Most BJJ classes follow a familiar pattern: a warm-up, then a technique shown step by step, then time to practise it with a partner. You can go at your own pace.
